IEEE AIxVR was established in 2018 under the name IEEE AIVR and was held annually in December through 2022. In 2023, the conference was renamed IEEE AIxVR to better reflect its broader focus on the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Extended Reality technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). The renaming also helped avoid confusion with unrelated events using the name “AIVR.”

At the same time, the conference schedule was moved from December to January to better align with the timing of related events in the international conference calendar. As a result, no IEEE AIVR/AIxVR conference was held in 2023.

IEEE AIxVR traditionally rotates between the American, European, and Asian regions. Following successful editions in Los Angeles, Lisbon, and Osaka, IEEE AIxVR 2027 will take place in Vancouver.
